The first question that came to mind when we heard about Brooklyn Craft was not about how they scored such an uber-comprehensive name and website but how did they figure out that making their wacky and wild sock animals would be as cool for you and me as it would be for the kids and friends-with-kids? Here’s their story.
Artists & Fleas: Tell us about your collection.
Brooklyn Craft: The collection of sock monkeys and “sockelphants” (sock elephants) are my own modern twist on the original Rockford red-heeled sock monkeys. They are more playful and colorful and have little personalities all their own. My favorite is “Bosco” the skeleton sock monkey that my friend Wilson came up with. He is one of my best sellers.
A&F: How long have you been crafting and how did you get started?
Brooklyn Craft: I learned everything I know from my mom. She is a very craft lady too. She is a quilter among many other things. She used to make clothes for me and halloween costumes. She taught me how to sew when I was very little and started making Barbie clothes and doll clothes, and just about anything I could make myself I made.
A&F: What and or who inspires you?
Brooklyn Craft: I am insipred by boring stuffed animals. I wanted to make a toy that a little kid or adult could own for a long time and have a story. I make a lot cross stitches and baby quilts. I need things to have an archival quality. I am very interested in family heirlooms and any fiber object that can be passed down.
A&F: What is it about your collection that separates you from other, ahem, crafters?
Brooklyn Craft: Its always changing and its always colorful. You can always count on me having something new at my table.
A&F: What do you like about selling at A&F?
This weekend was my first time at the market and I’m looking forward to getting a more diverse crowd here. I have something that nobody else offer and I hope I draw an even bigger crowd.
A&F: Do you do custom orders?
Brooklyn Craft: I LOVE a challenge and encourage people to email me with custom orders. Its a new fun project to work on. it keeps me on my toes!
Find Brooklyn Craft at Artists & Fleas this Saturday from 12-8pm or check out their line on their ETSY shop.
